Dinner Table

A mixed media table model that explores the themes of family unity by passing down memories from one generation to the next. This is symbolised by ink imprinting and table stains.

Mixed media (textile, ink, acrylic, coffee, tape, super glue, plastic sheets)

The concept for my artwork is ‘family unity’. The times I remembered feeling the most connected to my family is when we gather and have meals around  the Chinese dinner table. I made a table model as a response, since it is where we share many fun and memorable conversations.

I fused acrylic with different liquid food ingredients for mark making experiments, such as soy sauce, coffee, and vinegar. These print marks symbolise the memories my family shared when we ate, since dinner gatherings are a huge part of our culture as a ceremonial bonding event.

For my final draft, I designed a small scaled dinner table model. I folded the table cloth in irregular ways to imprint acrylic and sauces onto the fabric. My final art  conveys how memories and legacy are passed down from one generation to another through familial bonds. The stains represent knowledge imprinted by the older generation to the new generation.
